Patient satisfaction is a reality for the healthcare industry.
Today’s healthcare reality includes the HCAHPS survey. This survey is a standardized poll for hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country to provide a national benchmarking information to enable consumers to make objective quality comparisons between hospitals.
The survey was designed by the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) and was developed with 3 particular goals in mind:
PROVIDE an effective method to measure patients' perspectives on hospital care
PRODUCE valid and recognizable comparisons across hospitals nationwide
SUPPLY consumers with measurable data allowing them to make an informed decision when selecting a healthcare facility.
Why is it important for your hospital participate?
Monitoring, and improving patient satisfaction levels is of utmost importance. Most hospital executives understand the importance of conducting patient satisfaction studies, and now HCAHPS provides hospitals the opportunity to not only monitor patients' satisfaction, but also participate in a national benchmarking program that allows the hospitals and patients in their community the ability to compare their hospital to others in the area.
Another key reason is to insure hospitals receive their full Medicare reimbursement. Hospitals are required by CMS to report quality measures including patients' experience of care (measured with the HCAHPS survey) or face a 2% reduction in their annual payment update (APU).
